The Palace of Westminster is a globally significant symbol of democracy and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it needs a programme of more comprehensive restoration and renewal to ensure it is fit for future generations. The Parliamentary Buildings (Restoration and Renewal) Act was passed in 2019 to establish the R&R Programme, to deliver this work.
Restoring and renewing the Palace will directly benefit the one million people who visit every year and the thousands who work here every day including MPs and Peers, by delivering an improved building, with better accessibility, more reliable services and enhanced health and safety.
A recent public poll revealed that over 70% of people across the UK believe the Palace should be preserved for future generations, underlining support for action.
Victoria Tower
We’re getting on with other necessary work, including the restoration of the Victoria Tower, refurbishment of office buildings, fire safety improvements, roof and stone repairs. We’re also delivering hundreds of hours of survey work, which helps build our understanding of the Palace. The findings will be used to inform design and construction strategies for the restoration of the Palace.
Building Crafts College, Stratford
R&R presents a unique opportunity to showcase the UK’s heritage trades. Jobs in traditional skills, from stonemasonry and carpentry to metalwork and joinery, could be offered through the work.
